How to perform Decline Smith Press

  1. Place a decline bench underneath the Smith machine. Now place the barbell at a height that you can reach when lying down and your arms are almost fully extended. Using a pronated grip that is wider than shoulder width, unlock the bar from the rack and hold it straight over you with your arms extended. This will be your starting position.
  2. As you inhale, lower the bar under control by allowing the elbows to flex, lightly contacting the torso.
  3. After a brief pause, bring the bar back to the starting position by extending the elbows, exhaling as you do so.
  4. Repeat the movement for the prescribed amount of repetitions.
  5. When the set is complete, lock the bar back in the rack.

Muscles worked

  • Chest (primary): pushes the arms forward and across the body — your horizontal pressing power.
  • Shoulders (secondary): raises and rotates the arms and drives everything overhead.
  • Triceps (secondary): straightens the elbow to lock out every press and pushdown.

Form tips

  • Set the shoulder blades down and back and keep them pinned there so the chest, not the front of the shoulders, does the pressing.
  • Set the seat and pads so the machine's pivot lines up with the joint you're training before your first rep.
  • Treat every rep the same — a repeatable setup and bar path is what lets you add weight safely over time.
  • Stop a rep or two short of failure on most sets to keep form clean and recover faster.

Common mistakes

  • Flaring the elbows straight out to the sides, which puts the shoulder joint in a weak, vulnerable spot.
  • Leaving the seat or range on a setting that forces the joint into an awkward angle.
  • Chasing weight jumps before the current load feels solid on every rep.
