How to Break a Strength Plateau: 7 Fixes That Work

First: is it actually a plateau?

A single missed rep isn't a plateau. Neither is one rough week. Strength fluctuates day to day with sleep, stress, and what you ate, and a bad session tells you very little on its own.

  • Your best set on that lift has been the same or worse for 3+ weeks
  • The lift feels heavier than the number says it should, session after session

3. Not enough volume or frequency

Signs: You train the stalled lift once a week, for a few sets. You feel fresh and recovered but the number won't move. Progress on other lifts is fine.

Fix 1: Deload

Take a week at roughly 50–60% of your normal working weights, or keep the weights but cut sets in half. Don't skip the gym—keep moving, keep practising the lifts, just remove the strain. Many lifters come back from a proper deload noticeably stronger within a week or two. If you haven't deloaded in over eight weeks, do this first regardless of what else you suspect.

Fix 2: Make smaller jumps

Best for: progression that's too aggressive

If 5 kg jumps have stopped working, go to 2.5 kg. If 2.5 kg jumps have stopped working, buy microplates and go to 1 kg.
